Educators respect and value the history of First Nations, Inuit and Metis in Canada and the impact of the past on present and the future. Educators contribute towards truth, reconciliation and healing. Educators foster a deeper understanding of ways of knowing and being, histories, and cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Metis.
I have found ways to include this standard across my teaching. I had a student from the Social Justice 12 class come into my Humanities 8 class to teach them about the residential schools and reconciliation on the anniversary of the publishing of the 215 graves found in Kamloops. I also have incorporated Indigenous knowledge in the classroom in my therapies unit with the psychology students. I also touched on important Indigenous issues in the news when they were there in current events.
